A modality worklist is one of those quiet features that nobody asks for by name, then cannot live without once they have it. It removes a small, repetitive task that, multiplied across a busy day, adds up to real time and a real source of errors.

The short version: A modality worklist (MWL) sends patient and study details to your imaging equipment so the technician does not retype them at the machine. It speeds up each study and, more importantly, stops the mismatched and misfiled studies that come from manual entry.

What a modality worklist is

Veterinary team at an imaging workstation

Modality worklist is a DICOM service. In plain terms, the modality pulls the booked patient and study information, the name, the ID, the study type, directly from your system. Instead of typing all of that into the machine before each study, the technician selects the right entry from a list that is already there. The image then comes back tagged correctly from the start.

Why it speeds up your workflow

The time saved per study is small, a minute or two of typing. The bigger win is accuracy. Manual entry at the machine is where typos, wrong patient names, and inconsistent study labels creep in, and those are exactly the errors that cause a study to misfile or attach to the wrong patient. A worklist removes the keystrokes and the mistakes in one move.

What good MWL support looks like

  • Booked studies appear on the modality without manual entry
  • Studies return tagged correctly, so they file to the right patient
  • It works with the modalities you actually run
  • It fits your existing practice workflow rather than forcing a new one

Demo question: ask how studies get their patient details today. If the answer is “the tech types them at the machine,” a worklist is one of the fastest quality-of-life upgrades you can make. Worth confirming your modalities are MWL-capable, since the equipment itself has to support it.

Where Keystone fits

Keystone is built to fit into your imaging and practice workflow rather than sit apart from it. If modality worklist matters for your setup, it is worth confirming in a demo with your specific modalities and practice management system, so you see exactly how booked studies flow to the machine and back into the archive.
